The European goldfinch,
Carduelis carduelis, is a boldly coloured finch, found in both urban and rural environments,
from city gardens to woodland, heath and farmland. It eats small seeds and bugs. It is typically seen plucking seeds from matured
flowers like thistles and teasels. It can be seen eating and carrying invertebrates especially when nurturing young. Goldfinch will visit bird tables and feeders throughout the year.
During winter in rural environments, goldfinches sometimes move about searching for food in flocks or 'charms' of up to a 100 birds. While having a strong resident population some of our UK birds
will migrate to more moderate climes to avoid the worst of winter.
