Botaurus stellaris, is a thickset member of the heron family. It typically feeds on fish,
small mammals, amphibians, crustaceans, insects, even fledgling birds. In the breeding season the bird can be heard
calling but is typically very hard to see as it feeds and breeds in and around reed beds. In warmer parts of Europe
many populations are resident while those of colder regions make winter migrations. Northern birds migrate
to southern Europe and northern Africa. In the UK the bittern is a species under threat.
